This program follows the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program’s (NAEPP) 2007 Expert Panel Report 3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma (known as “EPR-3”). Topics include the pathophysiology of asthma and allergy; current treatments; use of peak flow meters and medicine delivery devices; ways to prevent asthma episodes.

The presentation illustrates effective ways to teach patients to manage asthma by using a problem-based case study of a family who has a child with asthma. It offers strategies to address common barriers to effective asthma self-management: lack of understanding, competing health beliefs and intentional non-adherence.

The Maryland Nurses Association program has approved this program for three (3) continuing education credits.

The Continuing Respiratory Education (CRCE) system of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) has approved this program for 2 hours.
