“Ahoy, Mateys! I’m Captain Jack and I’m allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and sesame seeds.”
Our son Jack is 5 years old and has a severe and life-threatening allergy to peanuts, plus tree nuts and sesame seeds. He lives every day trying to avoid these awful little enemies that are so “normal” for most kids his age. Armed with his epipen and caring people around him, he is doing his absolute best to be careful.
We found out he was allergic in January 2012, but had suspected it since he was about 14-months old when his lips swelled up instantly after tasting sesame noodles (which we now know is packed with peanut butter). Silly and naive as we were then, we did not have him tested, just went with our gut feelings and avoided anything with nuts in them. Halloween 2011, we had him try a Reese’s cup by taking a tiny bite (again, I know how dumb this was NOW) and he started crying and pawing at his mouth saying his tongue hurt. In hindsight over his three years, we were VERY lucky. Now we know. And we make sure everyone around him knows. (Read the full story…)

Please join us in our fundraising efforts to donate to "Kids With Food Allergies", a group very close to our hearts. Joining this group last year really put our mission into motion and Jack has really loved every second of it. He's proud to be the leader of his crew and it has given him so much confidence to speak up and advocate for his little self. We sincerely appreciate your donations... we want to rock this event - please help us do that! :-)
Join Captain Jack's Peanut-Free Pirate crew and walk with us on at Strides for Safe Kids September 8th in Plymouth Meeting mall. This was such a fantastic event last year and we all had a great time. Kyle Dine will be there, putting on a show and singing for everyone, the event is inside so you don't have to worry about the weather and there are loads of activities for the children (including the indoor playground and carousel!). We would absolutely love your support - the bigger the crew, the better! Where your Peanut-Free Pirate gear, dress like a pirate or pirate princess and walk the plank walk with us!

The Peanut-Free Pirate Crew at Strides for Safe Kids 2012
Six million children in America live with food allergies. Kids With Food Allergies (KFA) educates families to prevent life threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) and to be prepared to respond to allergic emergencies. Educating families and communities is essential to saving children’s lives and keeping them safe and healthy.
With your help, we will educate, support and advocate on behalf of children.
Your gift will make a difference for millions of children affected by this potentially life-threatening disease. Thank you for taking Strides for Safe Kids!
